Water Level Controls for Hot Water and Steam Boilers

Boilers are designed to work within a specific NWL or Normal Water Level. Different types of boilers require different equipment to give an accurate measurement. This is due to what is going on inside the boiler. For example in a horizontal shell boiler the water level rises as the demand increases, this is due to more steam generating below the water level in the boiler. This as a knock on effect means that the steam surface area decreases (due to the shape of the chamber). To keep to the manufacturers recommended water level careful monitoring will be required.

If the water level exceeds these recommended levels then there are several options. Sometimes an alarm will sound alerting engineers or plant room operators or an automatically triggered valve will shut down the feedwater and the burners until the NWL is restored.
